The following article written by Kathleen Duncan has some great tips for new coin collectors.   I do make some comments on some of her suggestions, but overall there is some good advice here.  Thanks Kathleen.

Most new collectors make mistakes when they begin to assemble a collection of coins. Some of these are easily avoidable; others require a “heads up” from an expert. Here are some of the mistakes we see made most often and some practical suggestions on how to avoid them.

I. Buy Third Party Graded Coins
Unless you are purchasing inexpensive coins or bullion-related gold issues, you need to buy coins that have been professionally graded. It’s a virtual guarantee that the “raw” coins you buy are going to be overgraded at best or counterfeit/repaired at worst.  (Comment) This is an excellent suggestion.  The Company that I work with only deal with third party professionally graded coins.  They are among the best in the Industry.  Check them out at  ShopNulmis.com when you get a chance.

II. But…Buy the “Right” Third Party Graded Coins

When it comes down to it, there are only two grading services that, as of early 2001, are readily accepted in the market: PCGS and NGC. Coins graded by other services either trade at a discount or are absurdly overgraded. You can save yourself a lot of grief and aggravation by buying only PCGS and NGC coins. ( Comment) Here is one of those areas that I have an addition to Kathleen’s recommendations.   Though my company uses PCGS and NGC to grade as third party graders, we also use ANACS , and they have a very good reputation.  Again you can see the coins  ShopNumis.com

III. And…Buy the Coin and Not The Holder
Not every PCGS or NGC coin is “high end” for the grade. Establishing a relationship with a dealer who can determine which coins are nice and which are average (or inferior) is essential.

IV. “I Can Do Everything Myself”
No you can’t. You need to have a close working relationship with one or two knowledgeable coin dealers. New collectors who think they can compete in the market against experienced dealers and collectors are a virtual certainty to have their heads handed to them. End of discussion.

V. Take Your Time
Most great coin collection are assembled over the course of decades; not months. Sure, you can complete a set of Indian Quarter eagles in thirty days. But rushing though a set is a good way to make mistakes; most of which will cost you in the long run.

VI. Learn about Coins
No matter what you collect, the more you learn the better your collection will be. Learn how to grade. Learn what nice coins look like. Learn about the coins you have decided to specialize in. Learn how the coin market works. If you don’t have the time to learn as much as you should, establish a relationship with a dealer who can teach you basic knowledge in a short period of time. 

VII. Don’t Over-invest
When you buy coins remember this: they should be purchased for enjoyment not investment and they should be purchased for long term hold. Even if you buy good coins from a very reputable dealer, there is a good chance that if you have to sell them quickly, you’ll lose 10-30%. If you can’t afford this sort of market risk, either don’t buy coins or buy issues with smaller downside risk.

VIII. Deals That Are Too Good To Be True ARE Too Good To Be True
You hear about a coin that generally sells all day long for $1500 but is priced at $750. Sounds like a “great” deal, right? Wrong! When you see a coin advertised in Coin World or listed on eBay that seems like its just too good a deal…need I say more?

IX. Buy Quality Not Quantity
We look at coin collections to buy all the time. Some of them have hundreds (or even thousands) of cheap, low grade coins. Others have a small number of really nice (and not necessarily expensive) coins. Take a guess which collections excite us more. If you have an annual budget of $10,000, buy three or four really neat $2,500-3,500 coins; not thirty $300 space eaters.

X. Coins Are A Hobby!
If you view numismatics as a life and death endeavor, you won’t enjoy it. Coin collecting is a fun hobby with many obvious benefits. Learn to appreciate the positive attributes that come with coin collecting and leave the stress to others.

XI. Set Goals For Yourself
If your collection has a beginning, middle and end, the progress you make will be easier to measure. Make certain that your goals are realistic.

XII. Stretch For Truly Rare Coins
Don’t make the common mistake that you skimp on the rarest issues in your chosen set and splurge on the most common. The right way to collect is doing the exact opposite.

I recently ran accross a marketing system that I have seen but never really looked into.  To my surprise this little marketing program has been making people wealthy for the last 100 years.

First of all let me tell you what it is not…it is has nothing to do with Internet marketing. Surprised? This is a business that is more stable, more consistent and more economical than the Internet. One that is highly flexible, highly effective, and can target your market with pin point accuracy. What is it? Postcard Marketing. Surprised again?

With all the “high-tech” marketing systems available to business owners today, you may ask yourself, why would anyone consider marketing with postcards?  I’ll tell you why, quite simply…it works, and works extremely well. Thousands of home business owners are running hugely successful businesses using nothing but postcard marketing.

Before I started marketing with postcards, I gathered some information from experienced postcard marketers, to find out what makes marketing with postcards so profitable. Here is what I discovered.

1. Cost-effective- Postcards are a very inexpensive way to get your message out. In fact, regular sized postcards are 38% cheaper than using standard sized letters. For as little as a few hundred dollars, you can reach thousands of prospects and clients. No other marketing vehicle offers this level of reach for such a small investment.

Internet marketers use a highly effective method to get quality leads as well. It’s called PPC, or Pay Per Click Advertising. Even though these are quality leads PPC is not only difficult to master, it can be quite expensive to run campaigns. One marketer I know spends 5k or more every month to generate leads. Do you think most people starting out have that kind of money to advertise? Do you think that the majority of people are going to take the time to learn difficult strategies such as PPC?  From my experience they won’t.

Postcards are indisputably the most inexpensive targeted marketing strategy available. Whatever your mission – to advertise, invite, brand, remind, promote sell or recruit, with postcards, they can all be effectively accomplished.

2. High Readership- Postcards have a tendency to be seen more. The Postal Service suggests that postcards are more than six times as likely to be read as compared with direct mail letters – 94% versus 14%.

Because letters are in envelopes the consumer gets a chance to decide whether to open the envelope or discard it. Many people will just toss it in the trash without looking at it. Now compared to postcards, there’s no envelope. When you pick up the card you can’t help but see the message.

3. Highly Versatile- A Postcard campaign is simple to put together. With postcards there are no folding, collating, stuffing, licking envelopes etc. All you do is put on the stamp. And there are services that will even do that for you. With numerous options available to you regarding size and layout, a postcard can be designed for virtually any purpose.

4. Targets specific markets- With postcards the effectiveness of your marketing depends on the mailing list that you purchase. The great thing about quality mailing lists is that you can target your market with great accuracy. You can get a list for practically any product or service on the market. If some one has bought a product or service like yours before, chances are they will buy again. This is one of the major reasons why postcard marketing is so effective.

5. Easily Duplicated- For MLM If you are trying to build a network marketing business, you know that the two biggest problems facing your business are recruiting quality prospects, and training them to use a successful marketing system.

This marketing system is so simple anyone can duplicate it. It simply involves finding a quality mailing list, finding a quality printer for your postcards, mailing a specific amount of postcards a per day or per week to your list, and follow up with those who respond, that’s it. That’s the system. When your whole team uses this simple marketing method your downline will explode very quickly, because everyone knows exactly what to do. Now isn’t that how we all want to build our network marketing business?

There are of course more benefits in postcards, but these are the top five that everyone agrees on.

Postcards of course don’t guarantee marketing success. You’ve got to make good choices regarding the list, paper stock and size, colors, graphics, layout and copy. There is absolutely no doubt that with careful planning and strategy, postcards can definitely increase your prospect and customer base, along with your profits.

You must set goals in order to be successful in your own business. Its the secret of the wealthy. Its the difference between modest success and explosive success, etc.

Do you agree? I’m here to tell you it’s only half true…

Setting goals and writing them down is one thing. Anyone can do that and many people do. But most never, ever achieve their goals.

I’ll tell you exactly why shortly but first you must know this… Despite your best efforts, you will never achieve the success you are looking for if you never actually set goals for yourself and your business in the first place. Let’s at least agree on that.

Ask yourself, “What goals have I written down for myself and my business?”

Most people never set goals for themselves or their business at all. One day leads to another and the days continue to disappear without success.

How can you get to where you want to go if you don’t know where you’re going? The biggest roadblock to goal setting is YOU. Setting goals requires you to actually write down your dreams and put a date of accomplishment on them.

Do not get in the habit of working your business without goals. This leads to apathy and an empty checking account. Goals are the lifeblood of your business. Written goals that is. Statistics have shown over and over that small businesses fail within the first five years. You do not want to become a statistic; you want to become a success.

So how do you become successful at setting goals?

The first step, obviously, is to write down your intentions or exactly what you want to achieve. What intentions do you have for your life and your business? Write them down. When would you like to achieve them by? Put a date of accomplishment on your
goals.

Get a pad of paper and start writing NOW. Be bold and write them all down. Your intentions are now your goals.

Think BIG! You must be clear…You now have goals with deadlines. Your first step is accomplished but this is only half of the battle. Now comes the tricky part. Gut check time…

Do you feel as though you can achieve your goals? Do you actually believe you can achieve your goals? Ahhhh, the look I see you giving your computer screen right now could melt ice. “Of course I believe I can achieve my goals” you say. “Why else would I have written them down?”

Well, writing them down is all fine and good but if don’t actually believe deep down that you can achieve your goals, then they are meaningless. And THAT is why most never achieve their goals with their business endeavors.

If you do not believe you can achieve your goals…You can’t. You say you can. You wrote them down. But…If you do not truly feel you can achieve your goals with absolute certainty…You won’t. You must be crystal clear. Period.

Tough pill to swallow, I know. So how does one go about doing this?

This is where your mindset comes in to play – the other half of the battle. Let’s take this whole goal setting process just one step further now. Pay close attention here…In your mind, see the goals you wrote down as already accomplished. What does it look like when it has been completed? You’ve nailed it. How does it make you feel? How has your life changed?

Go to that place right now (the outcome) and WRITE DOWN that part in addition to the goals you want to achieve. Get into the state of mind as having already achieved the goal instead of always wishing or hoping for it like everyone else does.

Assume the feeling of the outcome. Stay in that state of mind as often as possible. Once you actually feel the outcome you will then, and only then, be able to attract the goals that you wrote down.

This is a fundamental principal that has stood the test of time. DO NOT take it lightly.

So, it’s really a two step process, yes?

“What you hold in your mind with energy and focus will tend to be created in your reality.” Read that again.

The great Joe Vitale wrote that in his recent book: “The Attractor Factor – 5 Easy Steps For Creating Wealth (Or Anything Else) From The Inside Out.”

When I first started reading this book I couldn’t put it down. Its already made a huge difference for me and it can for you.

I suggest you go out and grab yourself a copy right away. This will put what I just said into perspective and allow you to go out and nail the other half of the battle when it comes to goal setting so that you can achieve just about anything you want with your business.

Remember, success doesn’t happen to the uninvolved. Success happens to those who are not only persistent in reaching their goals, but to those who make a decision to reach their goals, get clear on what they want, and already feel themselves victorious in
the so called goal setting battle…A bit deep, I know…But without question, the difference maker.

You should never be without goals. Keep your intentions and your goals before you. Be clear, feel the outcome, and stay focused on the end result.
